Hypnosis has picked up an unwarranted reputation from stage
hypnotists, the media and superstition. The first thing people think is
the image of a fob-watch swinging from side to side and the showman
saying “You are getting sleepy, very sleeeeeepppppppyyyyy”.
The truth is a very different story...
Here we are going to bust the biggest hypnosis myths.
Myth Number 1) All hypnosis is like stage hypnosis
Hypnosis is actually one of the most useful tools used by
psychologists, psychiatrists and psychotherapists. Nobody uses a watch,
that is just a showman's gimick. The science of hypnotherapy has been
used for nearly 100 years and has been in constant scientific research
and development. One of the newest additions is the science of
Neuro-linguistic Programming or NLP. It has also been recognised that
there are both effective an ineffective ways to work with the
subconscious mind. One of the really ineffective techniques is to try to
overpower a subject with the power of the hypnotist's personality.
What does work is carefully constructed hypnotic scripts that speak to
your subconscious mind. That is where NLP comes in. What does work is
the gentle suggestion - in trance - that shifts old patterns in your
subconscious.
Myth Number 2) Hypnosis uses subliminals and makes you do things you don't want to do
Subliminals are inaudible words- often buried under music. There is no research proving that they work, and we do not use it in our hypnosis. Most of the scripts for our hypnosis recordings are available if you wish to check this fact. The effects of hypnosis are quite subtle at first, you simply notice little changes in your life. That annoying habit just doesn't seem to be there any more. Not at all like doing something weird and out-of-character. You'll probably start feeling more in control of your life rather than less. Perhaps you'll notice feeling more confident, more relaxed, and more like the kind of person you want to be.
Myth Number 3) Some people can't be hypnotized
The only reason you can't be hypnotized is if you are incapable of paying attention due to mental deficiency or brain damage. Of course you can resist being hypnotized if you wish to. People are hypnotised far more often than they think they are. Driving on auto-pilot is a good example - you drive a car, often without being consciously aware of your actions. That is being hypnotised. Losing yourself while watching a movie - that is being hypnotised.
Myth Number 4) Hypnosis is something strange and un-natural.
Sleeping, learning and many regular daily activities (like driving) are done in hypnotic trances.
Hypnosis is simply a deliberate utilization of the Alpha brainwave - or meditative state. It's normal and everyone does it every day. In many cases, unwanted behaviors are performed in a hypnotic state, giving rise to the expression "I didn't know what I was doing". And that is literally true. You can beat fire with fire though, and that is where hypnotherapy comes in. In fact, just knowing that some behavior is dysfunctional doesn't help you at all. What does help, is communicating gently with your subconscious mind.
Myth Number 5) You lose control in hypnosis
This is flat-out wrong, as anybody who has received a phone call in the middle of a hypnosis session can attest. Hypnosis sessions can make you feel very relaxed, and like you feel just before you drift off to sleep, that is true. It is your choice to allow the session to proceed, and to experience the benefits of hypnosis, or simply stop the session and continue with your un-wanted behaviors and automatic patterns. If you think about the things in your life that don't work for you, you have to admit that you are not in control of them, otherwise you wouldn't continue doing them.
